Many people don't know about cane's value in medical technology as an assist aid. Canes are described as a slender, strong but often flexible stem, as of certain bamboos, reeds, or rattans. The definition of walking stick or cane: "A stick or staff carried in the hand for support or amusement when walking". The name "Cane" originated from the Biblical Hebrew name "Kaneh" or "Can'ne", which is a tall sedgy reed plant with a hollow stem, growing in moist places and is used for cane production.

Three generalized materials are identified in making canes: Botanicals; that includes fruits, raisins, stalks, weeds and woods, zoological materials like bones, coral, leather, mother of pearl, skin or hide and tortoise shells. And the last is the inorganic materials that are composed of glass, latex, metals, plastic, porcelain and synthetics.

Some techniques are being done to make decorative canes and that includes: metalwork, woodwork, sculptures and pottering. Decorative canes come in various types and designs. They are: Canes for woman and man, ethnic and folk, art canes, country walking canes, city walking canes, professional walking canes, and weapon canes.

The handle is the most important part of the cane because it gives a carver an opportunity to show his talent. Many intricate carvings in the form of dogs, horses, birds, human faces or figural handles of dignitaries are designed. Some that were made with silver trimmings and glass or jeweled eyes were much in demand. There's the crook or umbrella shapes, tau crutch handle, flattened knob handle, rounded and straight handle and a lot more.

Beneath the handles or collar of the canes is a hole that was drilled through the cane's upper shaft, so that tongs could be passed through them and forms the wrist cord for easier carrying of the cane. The shaft is the straight part of the cane, usually made of wood, but it can be found in other materials. Ferrules, the lower part of a cane can be defined as a cap of solid metal, to cover the bottom of the cane.
